purpose of a music video

Purpose of a music video
What would you consider to be the main purpose of a music video?

I think the whole purpose of a music video is to promote the artist and the song. In a way its like selling the song from one person to another, once you hear it you start to tell everyone else that way more and more people view the video and the artist makes money. I sometimes find that music videos can help me as a listener get a better understanding of the song. For example Rihanna Diamonds, When I heard this song I thought maybe this is a song popular for females its going to be very girly. However when I watched the video i understood with the lyrics at the same time that its about two people coming together.  Another purpose of a music video is one big thing and that's entertainment, musicians, dancers, singers can all show off their talent.  For me mainly a music video is a clearer aspect of the song and more visual which helps me understand it.

How might an artist extend their income through having a music video?
Again the music video can have so many purposes for it for example someones watches a music video they may like a specific dance  move, so they will tell their friends to check it out and so on, this way they get more views, the more views the more money the artist makes. Also I know recently Rihanna launched a Lipstick through the makeup company "MAC" and she wore this lipstick in one of her videos, after 3 days of launch her lipstick was sold out because so many people saw her wearing it and wanted to buy it, not only because she was wearing it because its hers and many fans bought it because it was also signed "RiRi". Not only has she made a lipstick as you can see below shes made a few other beauty cosmetics.

Describe how ant why music videos have been used to fill in for bands on tour or when otherwise unavailable?
In the 1970's this was when everyone really needed to start making music videos because it would help promote them more this way they would get more views, and publicity then make more money. Also as an audience it helps us understand the singer more in a way because, its their music videos its produced in their own style. Also it gives a chance for the singers to show off talent such as dancing,or even promote their cosmetics such as perfumes.

Thinking back through history and presently... how have music videos enabled an "extension of outlets" (opened up ways to get music to the masses?)
The music industry had grown massively throughout the years from the early 1940's where you used to have to go to concerts to see a band perform because they didn't have the technology to create and view music videos. Its amazing how everything had changed there's so many ways to get your music now it went from T.V's to computers to the internet and even on mobile phone devices now. Even technology in its self has improved such as we now have headphones we can use mp3 players, i pods, mobile phones, tablets, internet etc. There are hundreds of websites where you can download your music from the most popular would be you tube, YouTube is very popular not just for viewing videos but for listening to music and also downloading MP3/4. Theres also other websites such as spotify and I tunes. Due to all of these improved devices and quality this is how these celebrities make money. The more support and fans they get the more income for them. Back in the 1960's they didn't have any other ways to promote themselves like we do today they couldn't make perfumes and promote them because they didn't have enough fans or money to do that

Styles of Music Video

What is a narrative music video?

A music video is all about the way a story is told so that the elements are structured and organised in such a way it makes senses to the audience.

   Rihanna Diamonds        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWA2pjMjpBs

Why dod you think a narrative video was chosen for this song?
The song has a strong feeling its about two people " shinning bright like a diamond" the whole concept of the narrative music video is to the story about these diamonds. The video compares these two people to something beautiful which is like " Diamonds in the skyt"

How effective do you think the video is at promoting the artist and song? why ?
I think the video is really effective especially the way it starts off with the  artist covered in diamonds. Rihanna has tried to create something beautiful by comparing two people to diamonds.

Is there anything in the song that makes it memorable so that we might remember the song or the artists?
I think at the start of the video its very effective how theres loads of diamonds in Rihannas hand and the whole song is about diamonds so i think this helps us remember the song.
